Playa de Poniente
Playa de Poniente: Benidorm’s Golden West Shore
Stretching for nearly three kilometres along the western flank of Benidorm, Playa de Poniente is one of the finest urban beaches on the entire Costa Blanca. Wider and considerably calmer than its twin to the east, Poniente earns its name from the gentle western light that bathes it each afternoon, turning the sea a deep turquoise and the sand a warm shade of gold. If you are looking for a beach that combines all-day sun, world-class facilities, and a genuine sense of space, Poniente is hard to beat.
What Makes It Special
Where Playa de Levante pulses with energy and entertainment, Poniente strikes a more relaxed note — though it is no less impressive in scale or quality. The beach holds the coveted Blue Flag designation year after year, recognising its water quality, safety standards, and environmental management. A broad, well-maintained promenade runs its entire length, shaded at intervals by palms and lined with cafés, ice-cream kiosks, and terrace restaurants where you can refuel without ever losing sight of the sea.
Poniente is also a leader in beach accessibility. Ramps, beach wheelchairs, adapted changing facilities, and designated swimming zones with assistants ensure that visitors with reduced mobility can enjoy the Mediterranean in full. This commitment to inclusion sets it apart from many beaches in the region.
What to Do There
- Swim and sunbathe on fine, well-groomed sand that is raked and cleaned daily during the high season.
- Walk or cycle the full length of the promenade — a flat, scenic route that also connects to Benidorm’s wider cycling network.
- Water sports: pedal boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards are available for hire from several points along the beach.
- Beach volleyball courts are set up during summer months for spontaneous games.
- Sunset watching from the western end of the beach is a ritual for locals and visitors alike; the light here in the late afternoon is truly extraordinary.
At the southern end of the beach, the Balcón de Mediterráneo viewpoint offers a panoramic view over both Poniente and Levante beaches — well worth the short climb.
How to Get There
Poniente sits on the western side of Benidorm’s distinctive twin-headland peninsula, just minutes from the town centre.
- By car: Follow signs to Benidorm centre and then to “Playa Poniente”. Paid parking is available in several underground car parks nearby (Parking Rincón de Loix and Parking Mal Pas are the closest). Arrive early in July and August to secure a space.
- By bus: The ALSA coastal bus service connects Benidorm with Alicante, Dénia, and Calpe. Local urban buses stop on Avenida del Mediterráneo, a short walk from the beach.
- By train: The TRAM Metropolitano d’Alacant (line 1) stops at Benidorm station, from which the beach is roughly a 15-minute walk or a short taxi ride.
Best Season to Visit
Poniente is a genuine year-round destination. The sea is warm enough for comfortable swimming from late May through October, with water temperatures peaking around 27–28 °C in August. The shoulder months of May, June, and September offer the perfect balance: warm sun, manageable crowds, and hotels at more reasonable prices.
July and August are spectacular but busy — arrive before 10 am to claim a good spot. Winter visits have their own charm: the promenade fills with walkers enjoying the mild Levantine climate, and many restaurants remain open serving hearty Mediterranean lunches.
Practical Tips
- Sunbeds and parasols can be hired from licensed operators along the beach. Prices are regulated by the local authority.
- Lifeguards are on duty from mid-June to mid-September. Flags follow the standard colour system: green (safe), yellow (caution), red (no swimming).
- Showers and foot-washing stations are distributed along the beach at regular intervals.
- Dogs are not permitted on the main beach during summer (June–September), but there is a dedicated dog-friendly zone at the northern end.
- Restaurants: The promenade offers everything from traditional arroces (rice dishes) to international cuisine. Try the seafood restaurants near the old town end of the beach for the freshest catch.
- Nearby: Combine your beach day with a visit to Benidorm’s charming old town (Casco Antiguo), perched on the headland between the two beaches, with its whitewashed lanes and panoramic church square.
Playa de Poniente is, in the best possible sense, a beach for everyone. Its scale, quality, and inclusivity make it one of the defining experiences of the Costa Blanca — and a compelling reason to choose Benidorm as your Mediterranean base.
