Circus Festival of L'Alfàs del Pi
L’Alfàs del Pi has a special relationship with the performing arts — and with contemporary circus in particular. Every spring, this municipality in the Marina Baixa opens its public spaces to host the Circus Festival of L’Alfàs del Pi, a three-day celebration that transforms the town into a living stage where magic, acrobatics and creativity come together. From 3 to 5 April 2026, the street becomes the big top.
A festival for all audiences
The Circus Festival of L’Alfàs is not aimed exclusively at children. It is a performing arts gathering where established companies with decades of experience share a bill with young emerging artists pushing the boundaries of what circus can be. Acrobats, jugglers, trapeze artists, clowns, magicians and contortionists all appear in a programme designed to astonish audiences of every age.
The festival’s guiding philosophy is closeness. Performances take place in squares, parks and streets across the municipality, erasing the distance between performer and audience. There are no theatre seats — instead the spectator is enveloped by the show, becoming part of the act.
Festival programme
Street performances
The heart of the festival is the open-air shows spread across L’Alfàs del Pi’s public spaces. Companies perform in multiple slots throughout the day, giving families the flexibility to plan their visit as they please. The festive atmosphere spreads through the entire town.
Contemporary circus in indoor venues
For companies with more elaborate productions or specific technical requirements, the festival programmes shows in covered venues. These performances often combine circus with theatre, dance or new scenic technologies, stretching the limits of the genre.
Workshops and participatory activities
Throughout the three days, circus artists and educators offer introductory workshops for children and adults. Juggling, object balancing, partner acrobatics and clowning are among the skills explored in a playful, accessible setting. Workshops tend to have limited places and early registration is recommended.
The Circus Street
One of the festival’s traditions is the continuous street animation. Roving artists walk through the town’s streets for all three days, offering spontaneous performances, interacting with passers-by and creating an atmosphere of constant surprise — a staff spin here, an acrobatic tumble there, a giant soap bubble at the corner.
L’Alfàs del Pi and its cultural identity
L’Alfàs del Pi is one of the Marina Baixa municipalities with the longest tradition of quality cultural programming. Its commitment to contemporary circus is no accident: the town has recognised that the performing arts are both a tool for social cohesion and a distinctive tourist attraction that sets it apart from other Costa Blanca destinations.
The town’s proximity to the sea — the centre of L’Alfàs is just a few kilometres from Albir beach — and to the mountains gives the festival an exceptional backdrop. Many performances have the Mediterranean or the Serra de la Marina as their setting, creating images of rare beauty.
Participating companies
The festival draws companies from across Spain and from the wider European contemporary circus scene. The programming team selects acts based on artistic quality, diversity of disciplines and suitability for outdoor venues. It is common to find Catalan, Valencian, French and Italian companies that regularly perform at the continent’s major circus festivals.
A complete weekend
The festival takes place during the first weekend of April, making the most of the Costa Blanca’s mild spring weather. Gentle temperatures and clear skies create ideal conditions for open-air performances. The programme begins on Friday afternoon, reaches its peak on Saturday with the fullest day of shows, and closes on Sunday with the finale performances.
In addition to the shows, the festival usually features a food and drink area and craft stalls, turning the central space into a gathering point where visitors can spend the whole day.
