Cala de la Zorra: the natural pool of Torrevieja’s coves
Cala de la Zorra sits on the northern stretch of Torrevieja’s coastline, between Cabo Cervera and Punta del Salaret, directly below the Roca Mar urbanisation and Avenida Alfredo Nobel. Don’t expect sand: this is a rock platform with stones and pebbles that opens into a natural pool sheltered between the rocks, with exceptionally clear water because there is no sandy bottom to cloud it. It is one of the most photographed coves in town and, in summer, one of the busiest on the stretch locals simply call “las Calas”.
Know this before you go: it is not a cove for anyone after comfort. You enter the water over rock, slippery when wet, and there are no facilities. In return you get one of the best snorkelling spots in the Vega Baja, a couple of minutes from the car.
How to get to Cala de la Zorra
By car: from the N-332 take the turning for Avenida Alfredo Nobel (Roca Mar). The cove is level with Calle Babor; stone steps lead down from the avenue itself. Approximate coordinates: 37.9939, -0.6549.
Parking: there are free, flat, unpaved parking areas along Avenida Alfredo Nobel, fewer than 50 spaces in total. In July and August they fill early; after 11:00 expect to park several streets back and walk down.
By bus: Torrevieja’s urban line A stops in the coves area. Check seasonal timetables, as the service is reduced outside summer.
On foot: you can walk here along the shore from the La Mata promenade or from Cabo Cervera, linking the rest of the coves.
What you’ll find
The main swimming area is the natural pool: a basin between the rocks, calm when the sea is flat, where people swim and snorkel. At one end there is a small underwater cave that free-divers explore. The section known as Cala Higuera, with a metal ladder into the water and a strip of sand, is part of the same complex.
Above the cove there is a viewing point with a wooden deck for sitting, and a metal ladder that makes getting in and out of the water easier than clambering over rock.
Facilities: none at the cove. No showers, no toilets, no beach bar. The nearest bar is up in the urbanisation. There is no fixed lifeguard: the town council covers the coves area (Cabo Cervera–Punta del Salaret) only with boat patrols in high season, with no post on land. Don’t swim in swell or with an easterly wind.
Nudism: not permitted. This is a family, neighbourhood cove.
Snorkelling, freediving and jumps
The rocky bottom and the absence of sand give excellent visibility on calm days. It is a regular spot for snorkelling and freediving, and with a flat sea for stand-up paddleboarding too. Bring water shoes: the rock cuts and slips.
Jumping from the rocks into the natural pool (about 4 metres) is a local tradition, but the regional press has documented serious accidents at this cove and its neighbours from jumps off higher ledges. If you jump, check the depth first and only do it in calm seas.
In winter the crowd changes: it is a good spot for rock fishing.
Best time to visit
June and September combine warm water with fewer people. In July and August arrive before 10:00 to park and find a spot on the rocks; from midday the natural pool is packed. The coast faces east, so mornings give the best light for snorkelling.
Nearby coves
The whole stretch between Cabo Cervera and La Mata can be walked in an afternoon:
- Cala Higuera — right next to La Zorra, with a metal ladder and some sand
- Cala Redonda and Cala Gambote — small and rocky, to the south
- Cala Cornuda and Cala de los Trabajos — towards Cabo Cervera
- Playa de La Mata — 2.5 km of sand with full facilities, to the north
- Playa de los Locos — the nearest urban beach with lifeguards, towards the centre
Further down the Vega Baja, the beaches of Pilar de la Horadada are the sand-and-services alternative.
