Dénia castle: the alcazaba that commands the bay

The castle stands on a 60-metre hill in the very centre of Dénia, and it is both the town’s main monument and its viewpoint: from the walls you see the whole bay, the harbour, the Montgó massif and, on clear days, the outline of Ibiza.

Its origin is the Andalusi alcazaba of Daniya, from the 11th and 12th centuries, citadel of the governor of a taifa that became a maritime power. The site has two levels: the alcassaba above, seat of power, and the albacar, the lower walled enclosure where the medieval population took shelter.

What has changed (and almost no guide reports)

If you have read elsewhere that the Archaeological Museum is inside the castle, that information is out of date. The Museu Arqueològic left the castle on 8 October 2024, after 66 years in the rooms of the Palau del Governador, and moved to the Casa de la Marquesa (C/ Cavallers, 3), a restored 19th-century mansion in the old town.

The reasons, per the 2021 municipal study, were specific: insufficient exhibition space, lack of universal accessibility and inadequate climate control, critical for conserving the collection’s Islamic bronzes. The move and the new facility were funded with €287,000 of European Next Generation funds.

In its place, in the east gallery of the Palau del Governador, a City Interpretation Centre now covers two thousand years of Dénia’s relationship with maritime trade and the evolution of its urban fabric.

In summer, on concert nights on the Explanada del Governador the evening schedule may change.

Free guided tours

They are included in the ticket and form part of the council’s summer programme:

• Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday: 11:30, 19:00 and 20:30
• Wednesday and Friday: 11:30 and 20:30
• In English: Tuesday to Friday at 11:00

Meeting point in front of the ticket kiosk. Advance booking required on 96 642 02 60, daily from 10:00 to 13:00. The programme changes each season: confirm by phone before you go.

What to see inside, in order

1. Portal de la Vila — the main gate, 12th century and Almohad in origin, with a barrel vault and pointed arches.
2. Torre del Consell — 15th century, the most notable structure on the perimeter. The Consell de la Vila met here; inside it keeps a Gothic ribbed vault.
3. Torre Roja and Torre del Cos de Guardia.
4. Baluarte del Governador — 16th and 17th-century reinforcement against Barbary piracy.
5. Explanada del Governador — the viewpoints, and the stage for the Música al Castell festival, with free traditional music concerts for two weeks each summer.
6. Palau del Governador — built around 1600 under the marquisate of Dénia and the Duke of Lerma; Renaissance architecture, today home to the Interpretation Centre.

Historical milestones: 1244, conquest by Jaume I and a change of use for the spaces; 1947, transfer to municipal ownership; restorations of the Palau and the towers between the 1980s and the 2000s.

Getting up there

On foot from the Plaça de la Constitució: steps on calle Hospital, next to the town hall, up to the Portal de la Vila; then a second flight up the Costera Madre Amparo, which comes out on calle Sant Francesc, the entrance to the site.

Accessibility: private vehicles cannot go up, except for people with disabilities, who may drive as far as the Explanada del Governador. Wheelchairs and pushchairs reach the upper esplanade on a paved path with some gradient; the rest of the castle is on foot only.

Parking: the castle has no car park of its own. The most practical reference is the beach area with access from Avinguda d’Europa, about 650 metres away (9 minutes’ walk). For reserved disabled bays in the town centre, the official contact is the local police.

Best time to visit

In summer, late afternoon and evening. From 1 July to 15 September the castle is open until midnight, and it is the only time of year you can stand on the walls in the dark with Dénia lit up below. That is its distinctive argument against any other castle in the district.

Outside summer, early morning or sunset: there is no shade and the approach is uphill. Avoid midday in July and August.
