Dénia municipal market: where the fish market’s catch arrives

Dénia’s covered food market opened in the spring of 1955 on calle Magallanes, parallel to the Marqués de Campo shopping street. It is a bright hall with a double-pitched roof divided in two: a fish hall with its own entrance on carrer del Mercat, and a large open hall with high ceilings and three aisles.

This is not a market converted into a gastronomic attraction for tourists: it is still the market where local people shop, and where the fish landed at the lonja arrives each day, red prawn included.

Opening hours

It opens Monday to Saturday mornings and closes on Sundays. On the exact time we have to be honest: the municipal portal says 7:30-15:00, other sources give 8:00-15:00 or 7:00-14:00, and the market’s own website is under maintenance. Count on 7:30/8:00 to 15:00; from 14:00 the stalls start packing up.

For special events such as the Nit de la Llum it extends its hours.

What you’ll find inside

Around 50 working stalls (the building has some 60 pitches): 3 fishmongers, 5 fruit and vegetable stalls, 3 bakeries, 2 florists, one gourmet stall, a herbalist, the Hortasana cooperative, several butchers and 5 catering businesses.

Those café counters, in the middle of the building, are part of the appeal: this is where people have breakfast, tapas and a mid-morning glass of wine.

Refrigerated lockers. Since February 2025 there have been 29 lockers at three temperatures — chilled (2-8 °C), frozen (−5/−18 °C) and ambient (+12 °C) — funded with Next Generation EU money. You leave your shopping and collect it until 18:00 using a code. A year on, only around 30 people a month were using them, so the council is changing the model: having to ask the stallholder for the QR code was a barrier.

The red prawn: the detail almost nobody explains

The Dénia red prawn is Aristaeus antennatus, the same species fished at Palamós, Garrucha or Calp. What sets it apart is the fishing ground and the handling at the lonja.

And here is the important detail: the auction is not held at the market but at the fish market, Monday to Friday from 16:00. At the market you buy the result of that auction.

The prices explain why it is a cult product: between €150 and €300 per kilo in a normal season for top grade (prawns of 60 grams or more), with documented records of €290/kg, €370/kg after the October 2023 storm and over €400 at Christmas and during the D*na Festival. Second grade runs around €130/kg and fourth grade drops below €60.

The market also hosts the Dénia Red Prawn Creative Competition.

Dénia, UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy

Dénia was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy on 11 December 2015, the first Spanish city in that category of the Creative Cities Network, with the project “Dénia & Marina Alta Tasting Life”. In 2025 it marked its tenth anniversary.

The market is explicitly part of the bid’s story: the chain UNESCO recognises runs “from fishermen and farmers to cooks, schools, markets and gastronomic events”. It is not a tourist add-on bolted on afterwards.

One clarification worth making, because it is often confused: what UNESCO recognises as Intangible Cultural Heritage is the Mediterranean diet, not Dénia. Dénia qualifies through the Creative Cities Network, a different programme.

The Monday street market

As well as the covered market, Dénia has a street market every Monday on the Torrecremada esplanade, between calles Germans Maristes and Mestre Monjo: textiles, footwear, leather goods, homeware, crockery, plants, toys, crafts and costume jewellery.

• During the Fira de Tots Sants it moves to Avenida Joan Fuster.

Getting there and parking

The market is right in the centre, at calle Magallanes 5. By car, AP-7 exit 62 (Dénia/Ondara) or the N-332.

Parking: there are 277 regulated spaces (267 standard and 10 for reduced mobility) around the market and old town: calles Carlos Sentí, Mercat, Magallanes, Cándida Carbonell, Colón, Calderón and the Estación car park. In the Mercat zone the maximum stay is 1 hour (2 hours in the Centro zone), at €0.20 / 20 min, €0.60 / 1 h and €1.20 / 2 h. The council has a free app, ParkTime, showing real-time availability.

The easiest option is to leave the car at the Estación car park, next to the tram, and walk down.

By TRAM: line 9 (Dénia-Benidorm) has its station about 10 minutes’ walk away. Hourly service; Dénia-Benidorm takes around 81 minutes and Dénia-Calp about 45.

Best time to go

Between 7:30 and 10:00: that is when the freshly landed fish is on the counters and the bar stalls are serving breakfast. Saturday morning is when the market is liveliest. Avoid 14:00-15:00.
